The Importance of Antibiotic Stewardship in Dentistry

When prescribing antibiotics, dentists should be sure that the benefit outweighs the risk and that the antibiotics are being prescribed according to current guidelines and best practices. Much of the information clinicians may have learned in dental school or residency is now being shown to be incorrect. This is especially true with respect to the duration of antibiotic use. Common practice was to prescribe for 7 to 10 days and to direct the patient to finish the full course of antibiotics even if symptoms improved, but current guidelines recommend the shortest possible duration (3 to 7 days) of therapy and the discontinuation of antibiotic use 24 hours after symptom resolution. The vast majority of antibiotics prescribed by dentists are to “prevent a potential infection” with no evidence to support their use. By educating both patients and practitioners about proper antibiotic use, we can minimize the risks associated with antibiotic use. Join our Dental Antibiotic Stewardship Program to gain the knowledge and tools necessary for safer, evidence-based prescribing practices.
